GARRICK, David (1717-1779). Autograph draft letter signed [to William Pitt first Earl of Chatham], Hampton, 26 February 1772 , 'It has been said, that there is a charm in particular verses to care for many disorders', relating the state of his health and thanking for the verses delivered by Lord Lyttleton, with numerous correction and insertions, 2½ pages, 4to (228 x 183mm) , with annotation on blank verso 'My answer to Lord Chatham's Verses'; and an autograph note signed to Mr. Burney asking for a newspaper, n.p., n.d. 1 page (162 x 200mm) . -- PITT, William, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708-1778). Autograph letter signed ('Chatham') to (David Garrick , Burton-Pynsent, 3 April 1772 , apologising for the late reply to his letter, praising his correspondent, adding 'Need I say, what charms the Verses from Mount-Edgecombe have for all here' and finishing with his concern for Garrick's health, 2 pages, 4to (241 x 188mm) , integral blank; and Chatham's autograph poem entitled 'To Mr Garrick, in answer to his Verses from Mount-Edgecombe' starting 'Leave, Garrick, the rich Landskip, proudly gay Docks, Forts, and Navies, brightning all the Bay ...'. -- MACKLIN, Charles (?1697-1797). Autograph letter signed to his wife Elizabeth, Dublin, 18 May 1785 , apologising for not writing sooner, saying that he played Shylock twice the previous day 'the house crowded', relating news of ' Pat ' about his family adding that his son James 'is a most promising young man', listing those who have been entertaining him, and advising her that a Mr. Perry will be staying with her in London on his way to France and asking all consideration be shown him, 4 pages, 4to (225 x 180mm) , (seal tear repaired with slight loss). -- CLARKE, Mary Anne (1776-1852). Five autograph letters, one in the third person, one initialled, three signed, to Mr. or Mrs. William Nicols, 11 Hollis Street (2), others n.p., 24 June - 30 July 1808, three undated , expressing thanks for their attention to her brother, and promising to settle her bills, and in the letter dated 30 July 1808 angrily accusing William Nicols of criminal behaviour adding 'What need I care for her [his wife] telling the laundress I was worse than a common prostitute?', 7½ pages, 4to and 8vo , 2 integral address leaves, 1 integral blank (one seal tear repaired with slight loss); and an autograph note.
