[Watertown, Massachusetts: Printed by Benjamin Edes, 1775] Printed handbill (8 1/4 x 6 1/2 in.; 209 x 167 mm). Contemporary manuscript annotation in sepia ink to lower left margin "To Lt. Wells..."; lightly browned, fold separations, some with artless repair on verso. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. A handbill announcing the recruitment of soldiers for the American Revolutionary War In May of 1775, Horatio Gates rushed to Mount Vernon and offered his services to George Washington when news reached him that war had broken out. By that June, the Continental Congress had began organizing the Continental Army, with Washington taking charge. Washington then petitioned for Gates to be appointed adjutant of the army, and on 17 June 1775, Congress commissioned Gates as a Brigadier General and Adjutant General of the Continental Army, making him the first Adjutant General of the United States Army.The present handbill, which is dated in print 10 July 1775, was issued shortly after the Battle of Bunker Hill. By October of that year, King George III declared that the Britain's American colonies were engaged in open rebellion. REFERENCE:Evans 14243; Massachusetts Provincial Congress.
