The second album contains 9 images, mostly cdvs of women and children; four daguerreotypes of unidentified men and one young boy; six ambrotypes of men, women, and a young girl, most unidentified, with the exception of one portrait of a young man identified on the paper lining behind the plate as S.E. Payne (?) / Danville, Va / Sept. 5th, 1865; two cdv portraits, the first a lithograph of a Naval officer with Anthony's New York backmark, the second an unidentified portrait of a bearded gentleman with W.M. Roads' Charlottesville, VA backmark; and an expanding wallet with the initials O.M. in gilt lettering on the front flap, 5.75 x 8 in. William Mahone (1826-1895) was a native of Virginia, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and an instructor at the Rappahannock Military Academy. He then became a civil engineer with the Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad, eventually rising to president, chief engineer, and superintendent. At the start of the Civil War, Mahone joined the Confederate Army and took part in the Confederate capture at the Norfolk Navy Yard. He was commissioned brigadier general and major general in 1864. Following the war, Mahone entered politics and was elected to the U.S. Senate as a representative of the Readjuster party and served from 1881 to 1887. Provenance: Descended Directly in the Family of William Mahone Condition: Some scattered wear to cased images, i.e. loss of emulsion, scratches on plate, light tarnish around perimeter of some images; wear to cases; some cases detached; some missing one side of case; scattered toning and staining to cdvs.
