George Campbell RHA (1917-1979) Toledo Oil on board, 90 x 75cm (35.5 x 29.5) Signed George Campbell was born in Arklow, Co. Wicklow on July 29th 1917. His father died when George was just eight and living in Belfast. He was later to board at the Masonic Orphan Boys' School in Clonskeagh, Dublin. His mother, the artist Gretta Bowen, inspired him and his brother Arthur to begin painting and they held a joint exhibition in Belfast in 1944. His popularity rose and he held his first Dublin show at the Victor Waddington Galleries in 1946. Campbell developed close friendships with fellow artists, Gerard Dillon Daniel O'Neill and Neville Johnson. Campbell first visited Spain in 1951 and developed a love of the country, returning virtually every year. He moved to London in the mid 50's. Around this time he also spent six months living and working in a tiny fishing village near Malaga which proved to have a lasting influence on his work. Much of the work which he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1952 one were of Spanish subjects.
