Memorials oil on canvas signed and dated '28 l.r. sticker on stretcher verso reads C.M.A. / TR 3843/2 framed 29.25 x 23.5 in. (sight) 35.75 x 30.75 in. (frame) Memorials was exhibited and awarded second prize in the Industrial Painting category at the Cleveland Museum of Art's annual "May Show" in 1928. The review of the exhibition in the museum's Bulletin described it as "especially interesting in choice of subject: the old burying ground and behind it the profiles of the Ohio Bell Telephone Building and the Union Station tower, symbols of the new Cleveland." This painting is also illustrated in William H. Robinson and David Steinberg's Transformations in Cleveland Art: 1796-1946 (Cleveland: Cleveland Museum of Art, 1996), pp. 121. Transformations was published to accompany the exhibit by the same name. Memorials is captioned as not being exhibited as its location was unknown. Provenance:Exhibited Cleveland Museum of Art May Show 1928 Property from the Collection of Millie Carlson, Euclid, Ohio Condition: Patch on verso in u.r. Needs to be cleaned.
