Varying sizes from 40.3 × 30.5 cm (15 7/8 × 12 in) to 50 × 35.3 cm (19 5/8 × 13 7/8 in) Each signed by the photographer, variously annotated, dated in an unidentified hand in pencil or ink and four with ‘Magnum Photos’ copyright credit stamps on the verso.
Provenance Private Collection, London Catalogue Essay “During World War II George Rodger was a staff photographer for LIFE Magazine, he covered events in over 50 countries, the names of many one would not recognise today. After the war, he continued travelling – Europe – Far East – Middle East – USA. “Time and again his happy hunting ground [for photographs] was Africa. In 1948–1949, George bought a jeep and a trailer and drove across Africa, Cape to Cairo, and it was in a remote area of Southern Sudan that he found his favourite tribe, the Nuba of Kordofan. It was very difficult to get to Kordofan then – and it was difficult to return to Kordofan after 1949, although George made many attempts to find his Nuba friends again.
