Half-titles, one engraved map (of 2), 92 aquatint plates, 9 tinted, by Theodore, Thales and Newton Fielding Hegni, Himely, Salathé, Bennet and others after Theodore and Thales Fielding Copley-Fielding- Bonnington, Huber, Vauzelle, Lesaint, Roumy, Renoux, Coignet and others. (Some light marginal staining, title and preliminary with some spotting, spotting affecting map, title and preliminaries somewhat spotted, light marginal spotting.) Contemporary red half morocco, spines gilt (corners replaced, joints and head and foot of spines repaired, later lettering-pieces). Provenance : Abbé Cauvin (Canon of Notre Dame, Paris, labels, ink ownership stamps). This rare work was published with the plates in both coloured and uncoloured states. The Abbey copy was coloured and (writing in 1956) he states that only three copies had appeared at auction in England in the last fifty years, and only four copies since then (three uncoloured [one of these incomplete], and the coloured Botfield copy of vol. I only) have appeared at auction in England. The work was one of the two most ambitious aquatint works edited by d'Ostervald and originally appeared in 24 livraisons . Brunet does not mention the coloured issue but does note that the uncoloured plates were available as proofs before letters and also as proofs on india paper. It is interesting to note the large number of British artists employed on the project: a reflection of their high reputation on the continent at the time.
