GILLIGAN, Arthur (1894-1976) and Alfred GILLIGAN (1896-1978) -- A 2pp. a.l.s., dated Fir Tops, Grove Lane, West Chiltington, Pulborough, Sussex, 22nd July 1958, from Arthur Gilligan to Robin McConnell, enclosing his and his brother's autographs and advising him not to "bowl too fast before getting your length ... Watch for batsman's weak strokes & if you see him nibbling at the off ball try & get him caught at the wicket or in the slips by bowling 3 balls straight at the stumps & then one a bit wide of the off stump. Try and develop a slower ball -- variation of pace & this often gets a batsman in two minds;" a 1p a.l.s., dated Franklins, Shamley Green, Near Guildford, Surrey, 14th October 1958, from Arthur Gilligan to McConnell, enclosing a signed passport photograph and stating: "I wonder how many lads of your age realise that you had in New Zealand ... one of the greatest captains any country could possess -- I refer to Tom Lowry."
