VINS FINS ET MATURES DE LA RIOJA EN PROVANCE DIRECT DES CHAIS HISTORIQUES DES BODEGAS PALACIO FINE MATURE RIOJA DIRECT FROM THE HISTORIC CELLARS OF BODEGAS PALACIO Don Cosme, fondateur des Bodegas, figure au même rang que le pionnier Marquès do Riscal pour sa curiosité et pour son inlassable nature à entreprendre. Des rapprochements peuvent se faire entre ces deux personnages historiques: tous les deux suivirent leurs études à Montpellier, qui abritât l'une des écoles d'oenologie les plus célèbres de son temps. Tous les deux fondèrent des Domaines qui propèrèrent plus d'un siècle et qui, à notre époque, seraient à nouveau aux premiers rangs d'une révolution de la viniculture, avec le même but: produite des vins sérieux, vieillis en fûts de chêne. Le Marquès fut le premier des deux à fonder son Domaine, douze années avant Palacio, mais juste avant le groupe de Galiciens employés par Riscal et engagés pour finir la construction des ses chais, et quittèrent le site d'Elciego pour Laguardia, afin de commencer les travaux des chais du Domaine Palacio. Don Cosme était un esprit moderne, capable d'implémenter des idées aussi nouvelles que l'organisation d'un concours public pour la réalisation de l'étiquette des vins Palacio (concours gagné par un candidat italien). C'était également un homme plein de ressources: il ne perdit pas espoir devant l'étendue de l' épidémie de Phylloxera sur les vignobles de la Rioja. Déterminé à continuer son activité viticole, il se rendit à Valladolid où il loua un Domaine et, avec l'aide de l'oenologue Txomin Garramiola, il élabora un vin dans le style de celui de la Rioja à partir des raisins du Tinto Fino. Quand l'épidemie s'éteignit, Don Cosme retourna à Laguardia, mais Txomin lui resta dans la Vallée du Duero. Quelques années plus tard, ce dernier produira un vin appellé Vega Sicilia. Le Domaine resta aux mains de la Famille Palacio jusqu'en 1972. Les vins suivants (lots 478 à 492) proviennent directement des Chais des Bodegas Palacio, de leurs réserves personnelles, spécialement pour cette vente à Vinexpo Don Cosme, the founder of the Bodegas, ranks alongside the pioneering Marqués to Riscal for his inquisitive nature and for his untiring and enterprising spirit. There are coincidences between these two historical figures: both studied in Montpelier, one of the most famous oenology schools at the time. Both founded wineries which would thrive for more than a century and which, in modern times, would once again be at the forefront of a wine-making revolution, with the same aim: to create serious, cask-aged red wines. The Marqués came first as regards of date of his winery's foundation, 12 years before Palacio, but just as soon as the group of Galician workers Riscal had hired to build his winery finished the job they moved on from Elciego to Laguardia to start work on the Palacio winery. Don Cosme was a modern thinker, implementing such novel ideas as putting the design of the Cosme Palacio label out to tender with a public contest (the assignment was won by an Italian). And he proved a resourceful man. He did not give in when the dreaded phylloxera plague swept through the vineyards of Rioja. Determined to continue making wine, he went to Valladolid where he rented a winery and, with the assistance of his oenologist Txomin Garramiola, he used the local Tinto Fino grape to make a Rioja-style wine. After the plague had run its course Don Cosme returned to Laguardia, but Txomin stayed behind in Duero. Some years later he would produce a wine called Vega Sicilia. The winery remained in the hands of the Palacio family until 1972. The following wines lots 478 to 492 come directly from Bodegas Palacio Cellars released from their private reserves specifically for this Vinexpo auction Glorioso Gran Reserva--Millésime/Vintage 1964 Rioja.
