(Frontispiece with gutter renewed, scattered minor soiling, several head-lines slightly shaved.) Half crimson morocco gilt (extremities very slightly rubbed). Provenance : Frank C. Deering (1866-1939, bookplate). The frontispiece, headed "A Token for Mariners," depicts the wreck of "A ship of Dublin bound for Virginia" off Cape Cod in 1681. The numerous sinkings, maroonings and miraculous salvations range in date from 1553 (the shipwreck of Manual Souza off Ethiopia), to November 1703. A good many of the accounts relate to shipwrecks on the Atlantic routes between Britain and the New World, some to the West Indies trade routes. At least one account included is attributed to Linschoten. Pages 86-115 are devoted to "The Seaman's Spiritual Directory," with an array of prayers appropriate to those in peril on the seas. The first edition was likely published in 1704; reprints continued even into the early 19th century; all are quite rare. ESTCN3042; RLG notes one copy at Harvard.
