GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS CHAUCER, GEOFFREY. The Canterbury Tales. Waltham St. Lawrence: Golden Cockerel Press, 1929-1931. One of 500 copies (with 15 on vellum), this a copy belonging to the dedicatee, Hubert Pike (letter from Pike attesting to this laid into the back of the fourth volume). 4 vols., original publisher's binding of issue; quarter red niger morocco, patterned paper sides, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. 12 1/4 inches (31 cm), top edges gilt. viii, 156 pp.; viii, 192 pp.; viii, 204 pp.; viii, 224 pp. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings by Eric Gill Upper corners minutely bruised, spines as usual of slightly different tone. Housed in a later slipcase. A significant association copy. Evan Gill 281; Chanticleer 63, remarking on the variation in the colors of the leathers. Provenance: Hubert Pike (dedicatee).
