GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS -- Pervigilium veneris . London: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1939 -- A complete set of 14 proof sheets for the work on 7 bifolia, with proof aquatint engravings pasted onto the sheets (290 x 226mm), extensively annotated for the printer in pencil by Buckland Wright. (A little inkmarked and creased, a few light spots.) Enclosed within a sheet of paper watermarked '1954', with slipcase lettered in ink on the upper panel '33 sheets of drawings [ sic ] for PERVIGILIUM VENERIS (Golden Cockerel Press) unique set. John Buckland Wright'. Cf. Pertelote 141; Reid A33a. Pervigilium veneris. The Vigil of Venus , translated and edited by F.L. Lucas. London: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1939. 4° (285 x 220mm). Text in Latin and English. English and Latin titles with engraved and aquatint vignettes and press devices by and after John Buckland Wright 16 engraved and aquatint illustrations and 2 engraved and aquatint tailpieces by and after Buckland Wright. Original yellow morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, boards with upper and lower borders of Cockerel tools, spine lettered in blind (a few light scuffs on boards), original buckram slipcase. NUMBER 46 OF 100 COPIES FOR SUBSCRIBERS. Pertelote 141; Reid A33a. Both items within 2 uniform, late 20th-century vellum-backed boxes. Provenance : Ralph Donnithorne (sale, Christie's South Kensington, 18 March 1994, lot 283). BUCKLAND WRIGHT'S SET OF PROOF SHEETS OF THE PERVIGILIUM VENERIS EXTENSIVELY MARKED-UP FOR THE PRINTER with one of 100 copies of the volume. Buckland Wright's illustrations for this work were executed in Paris in 1938 as copper-engravings with aquatint, the first time that he had used this technique. The proof sheets bear the letterpress; onto these, Buckland Wright has pasted proofs of the engravings, and added comments throughout on the correct placement of the illustrations relative to the text blocks and the page margins and noted that the proof engravings will have shrunk slightly, and that therefore the final plates will be a little larger. COMPLETE SETS OF PROOF SHEETS FOR GOLDEN COCKEREL PUBLICATIONS ARE RARE AT AUCTION. (2)
