GORDON STEVENSON (1892-1982) PORTRAIT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865), 16th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES Quarter length, wearing a dark suit and coat, signed and dated 1926, oil on canvas laid on board 66 x 44cm. * Two life masks exist of Lincoln: one by Leonard Volk (1828-1895) from 1860 and another, showing the President bearded, by Clark Mills (1810-1883) from 1865. In correspondence with our consignor in January 2013 and on the basis of a photograph, it is the opinion of Librarian Jane Gastineau at the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection (Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana) that Stevenson modelled this portrait upon Mills' mask. A press cutting in the archives of the Lincoln Financial Foundation appears to illustrate this portrait and notes that it is `an uncommon portrait of Abraham Lincoln, painted by George Stevenson from a life mask of our martyred president`. Provenance: The Swedish American Line ship `Kungsholm`, built in 1953, and then to a second ship of the same name delivered to the company by John Brown in March 1966. In 1978, the ship was acquired by P&O and renamed `Sea Princess`. The painting was removed from the ship when she was bought by P&O. It was at this time that the picture became the property of the vendor's father in law, who was staff manager for P&O.
