GOULD, John (1804-1881). A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America. London: Richard & John E. Taylor for the Author, 1844-1850. 3 original parts, large 2° (558 x 377mm). 1p subscribers' list, prospectus leaf (445 x 282mm.) tipped-in at front of part I. 32 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES by Gould and Henry Constantine Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. (Occasional light spotting, slightly affecting about 9 plates, margins of most leaves in part III lightly browned.) Original paper-covered cloth-backed boards, each upper cover with printed title including a list of the birds contained within and the date of publication, (upper joint of part II split and spine chipped, parts I and II somewhat soiled and rubbed). FIRST EDITION, AND A FINE COPY IN THE RARE ORIGINAL PARTS. This was Gould's fourth monograph and it figured and described many new species. A certain amount of publisher's puff crept into the prospectus: it mentions Gould's belief that the work would be "found fraught with the highest interest". Zimmer p.257; Anker 176; Fine Bird Books p.78; Wood p.365; Nissen IVB 376; Sauer 13. (3)
