London: for the Author, [1833]-1834-[1835]. 1p. subscribers' list, 'To The Binder' slip (298 x 90mm.) bound in after the title. 33 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, heightened with gum-arabic, 8 by EDWARD LEAR the others by John and Elizabeth Gould 1 uncoloured lithographic plate by George Scharf all printed by Charles Hullmandel. (12 plates with some light spotting, 2 without imprints (?)never printed.) Zimmer p.252; Anker 171; Fine Bird Books p.77; Nissen IVB 378; Sauer 3. Bound with: A Monograph of the Trogonidae, or Family of Trogons. London: Richard and John E. Taylor for the Author, [1835]-1838. 1p. subscribers' list. 36 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, heightened with gum-arabic, one folding, by John and Elizabeth Gould printed by Hullmandel. (5 plates with some light spotting a few others lightly browned or soiled, the folding plate repaired at the fold.) Zimmer p.253; Anker 171; Fine Bird Books p.77; Nissen IVB 381; Sauer 4. 2 works bound in one volume, large 2° (529 x 360mm). Contemporary green half morocco gilt, g.e. (Some scuffing, light in the main but with a resultant tear to the leather of the lower corner of upper cover). FIRST EDITIONS OF GOULD'S FIRST AND SECOND MONOGRAPHS. This copy does not include the supplementary plates to tthe Toucans . The plates in the first edition, including those by Edward Lear were re-drawn for the second edition (1854). In addition new plates of new species were produced. These new plates were then re-issued the following year (1855) as a Supplement to the first edition , the theory being that this would allow the original subscribers to complete their copies of the work.
