GOULD -- RICHARD BOWDLER SHARPE (1847-1909) An Analytical index to the works of the late John Gould ... with a biographical memoir and portrait . London: Henry Sotheran & Co., 1893. 4 (285 x 200mm). Half-title, mounted photograph frontispiece portrait of Gould, 12pp. publisher's advertisments, printed in red and black, mainly for works by Gould. Original publisher's green cloth, lettered in gilt on upper cover and spine, t.e.g., other edges uncut (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance : Markee Library (shelf-label). FIRST EDITION. Sharpe's comprehensive work is an indispsensible companion volume to Gould's work, both for the compendious and monumental index which lists every bird or mammal figured by Gould by genera, species, and vernacular names, and for the oft-quoted and much-cited memoir of Gould in which Sharpe realates his acquaintance with the ornithologist, dating from 1862, and writes keenly of Gould's character, illuminating his personal biography with anecdotes from Gould's family and business life. Sauer pp. 338-340; cf. Zimmer p. 582.
