GOUNOD, CHARLES. Autograph music manuscript signed, of "Pierre l'Hermite Scene dramatique. avec Orchestre, Choeurs, et Solos," Paris, 1849. 38 pages, folio, 352 x 275mm (13 x 10 in.), comprising title-page (as above), list of forces and the full score, written in ink on ruled staff paper, 24 staves to the page, 2 pages neatly glued together, two leaves apparently excised (composer's corrections), slight soiling, otherwise in good condition. An extensive working manuscript of this oratorio-like work for baritone or bass solo (Pierre l'Hermite), chorus and orchestra. The extensive score features full text underlay in the composer's hand (plus an English paraphrase written in another, slightly later hand) and dynamic markings and instructions for performance ("un peu plus vite") added in crayon. A rousing, military call to the faithful, it is based upon the historical figure Pierre l'Hermite (d.1115) of Picardy, who left the trade of soldier, became a monk, preached a summons to the First Crusade, eventually leading a large cadre of crusaders to Asia Minor, where most perished.
