GRANT, JULIA DENT, First Lady . Autograph free frank ("Julia D. Grant") as Presidential widow, on mourning envelope (letter not present), addressed in her hand to A.J. Drexel of Philadelphia, clear duplex cancel ("H" in oval of vertical stripes) with circular "New York" 26 March 1889 handstamp, black-bordered mourning envelope . A fine example. A rare Presidential widow's frank. Curiously, although Julia Grant held the franking privilege for 16 years and 6 months, most of the handful of surviving examples appear to be dated 1889 or 1990. Curiously, the present example is on an identical envelope with identical cancellations to an example, addressed to Mrs. G.W. Childs, illustrated in Stern, History of the 'Free Franking' of Mail in the United States, pl.79, no.1, indicating that the two letters were mailed together and stamped by the postal clerk at the same time (3 p.m. on 26 March 1889.)
