GRANT, ULYSSES S., President . Autograph free frank ("U.S. Grant") as President, on envelope (letter not present) addressed in Grant's hand to his wartime aide-de-camp and close personal friend General W[illiam] S[illiman] Hillyer, 13 April n.y. [1869-1874], indistinct "Washington D.C. Free" circular datestamp, envelope with "Executive Mansion" imprint with "Secretary" deleted by Grant, New York backstamp on verso, negligible surface soiling, otherwise very fine. Hillyer (1831-1874) had known Grant in Missiouri before the war; Hillyer was an aide-de-camp to Grant from September 1861 and at the time of his death was the last surviving member of the general's Civil War staff. Provenance: Stern Sale, lot 173, notation and tiny "C.C. Hart" stamp (not located in Stern's publications on franks, however).
