GRANT, ULYSSES S., President . Autograph letter signed as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Army and REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT, to his caretaker, Washington, D.C., 2 October 1868, 3 1/2 pages, 8vo, on Headquarters stationery, soiled and spotted, clean tears at horizontal and vertical folds, one month before becoming President, General Grant pens a detailed letter to Elrod, caretaker of his Galena, Illinois farm: "...I am sorry you think of leaving me. I do not [ask] you to stay if you think you can do better and I do not really think you can. Five hundred dollars per year is but very little I know out of which to clothe & school a family but then it has been my intention to do much better by you as soon as the place itself produces the means to pay it..."; GRANT. Endorsement signed as Lieutenant General, to New York Governor Horatio Seymour, City Point, Virginia, 17 October 1864, 1 page, narrow 12mo, neatly inlaid , forwarding a document: "Respectfully forwarded to His Excellency Horatio Seymour...with the request that he will take the necessary steps to correct and remedy the list [not present] within represented..."; GRANT.
