GRANT, ULYSSES S., President . Autograph letter signed ("U.S. Grant") as President, to Hon. A.E. Borie of Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., 23 October 1869. 1 1/2 pages, 8vo, on Executive Mansion stationery . "Unless I otherwise inform you by telegraph, I will leave Washington on Tuesday next, in the 12:30 p.m. train. The children being at school now it is not our purpose to take them with us. If Mrs. Dent [a relation of Grant's wife, Julia Dent Grant] goes I will probably take her husband also. Mrs. Grant's and my best regards...." [ with ] Original envelope franked by O.E. Babcock, Grant's secretary, partially addressed in Grant's hand (the street and number supplied by his secretary), imprinted "Executive Mansion," circular "Washington D.C. Free" handstamp (slightly indistinct), indistinct Philadelphia receiving backstamp on verso. (Similar to a Grant frank without letter in the Louis Grunin collection, sale Siegel, New York, 5 May 1993, lot 2005.) (2)
