GREEK APULIAN BLACKWARE HYDRIA Circa 360-350 BC A ceramic blackware hydria with pedestal base, mammiform body, broad shoulder and everted rim; two strap handles below the shoulder and a round-section handle from shoulder to rim; the body decorated with a painted scene showing two female figures wearing belted chitons pinned with disc brooches at the shoulder, one standing, holding an elaborate mirror in her left hand and a scarf in her right, the other seated holding a weaving ladder and a foliate wreath, with rosettes, a casket, an ivy leaf and a foliate sprig in the field; to the reverse, a large palmette motif; running laurel leaf motif to the neck and banding to the rim; restricted use of white and ochre pigment to the stephane, earrings, necklace and ornamental motifs. Ceramic, 1.6 kg, 35 cm (13 3/4"). Very fine condition, restored. Provenance English private collection, acquired in London between 1997-2002; ex Bonham's October 2005, lot 303.
