Half-titles. 2 engraved titles, 20 etched plates by George Cruikshank first volume with plates printed in brown, second volume with plates printed in black. (Some light staining and browning, a few marginal tears repaired, lacking ads in both volumes.) Modern red morocco gilt by Riviere & Son. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of the first illustrated children's book in the modern sense. "By urging that 'works of fancy and fiction' have an important place in children's reading, [Edgar Taylor, the translator] may be seen as making the first moves in a campaign that was to lead to the final freeing of constraints upon the writers and publishers of books for children" (Alderson & Oyens, p.304). Lacking the ads in volume one, but with all other first issue points called for by Cohn. Mahony Illustrations of Children's Books 197; Cohn 369. (2)
