Contemporary limp vellum (loose in binding, some light marginal wear at end, lacking ties). Provenance : Andrew Fletcher (early signature on title); A.N.L. Munby (bookplate, his sale Sotheby's London, 22 March 1976, lot 194). FIRST EDITION. Guilandinus commentary on Plinius's account of papyrus and paper-making in Egypt, which Guilandinus had visited himself. The German physician and philosopher Melchior Guilandinus studied Greek, Latin and philosophy and had a strong interest in natural history. He became the protégé of the ambassador in Venice. Later Guilandinus made journeys to Africa and Asia and on the way back his ship was attacked; he was captured by pirates and remained several years a slave in Algeria. Eventually his ransom was paid and he returned to Italy. In 1561 he was appointed director of the botanic gardens at Padua. Adams G-1562; Wellcome 2988.
