Gustave Baumann (German/American, 1881-1971) The Way of the Year, 1916. Signed "Gustave Baumann" in pencil with hand-in-heart chop l.r., titled in pencil l.l. Color woodcut on Japan paper hinged to a heavier sheet, image size 10 7/8 x 9 7/8 in. (27.5 x 25.0 cm), framed. Condition: Margins approximately 1/2 inch with deckled lower edge. N.B. Born in Germany, Baumann came to Chicago in 1891 with his family. In 1897 he enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago. By the time he settled in Indiana where he made the work presented here, he developed his hand-in-heart chop. In 1918, he moved to New Mexico. Baumann's career spanned over fifty years, during which time he developed a unique style of lighting and point of view emphasizing the vastness of the southwestern landscape.
