Half Plate Tintype of Crowd Posed on Loew's Broadway Bridge, New York City

Estimate

Price realised:
US$940
Beschreibung:

Half plate tintype of a crowd posed atop Loew's Broadway Bridge, a pedestrian bridge over the intersection of Broadway and Fulton Street in New York City, ca 1866-1868. The bridge was constructed in 1866 in order to facilitate safe crossing of New York's busiest and most dangerous intersection, however merchants on both sides of the street - notably two rival hatters - found that they could make more money monopolizing a single side of the street than competing with businesses on the other side, leading to the dismantling of the bridge only two year's after it opened. The columns seen in the background of this photograph are those of St. Paul's Chapel, today the oldest surviving chapel in the city, dating to 1764. Condition: Very good condition.
