Les Costumes Populaires de la Turquie en 1873. Constantinople: "Levant Times & Shipping Gazette," 1873. 3 parts in one volume. Folio (349 x 256 mm). 319, [1], vii pp. With 74 photograph plates by J. Pascal Sébah. Later quarter black sheep. Small marginal purplish dampstain and associated fragility to first and last several leaves, title and last blank lightly browned from facing endpapers, text block cracked and some gatherings started, soft corner crease to the first 4 plates and surrounding text, spine rubbed. FIRST EDITION. Sébah was a commercial photographer based in Constantinople. Hamdi Bey commissioned him to make this album of studio portraits for the Vienna International Exposition. Men and women from various social ranks, ethnicities and religions across the Ottoman Empire are included. The three parts comprise: European Turkey (including Constantinople and Greece); the Ottoman Islands (including Cyprus, Crete and Rhodes); and near Eastern Turkey (including Syria, Lebanon, Baghdad, Mecca, Medina and the Al-Hejaz).
