MESTLER WITH NOTES IN HIS HAND LOOSELY INSERTED IN THE MANUSCRIPT. According to Mestler 'Perhaps the notable Japanese surgeon of the Edo period was Seishu or Zuikan Hanaoka [1760-1835], who also wrote on prescriptions fevers, diagnosis by means of symptoms, and obstetrics. He successfully operated for tumors [particularly of the breast], amputations of the extremities, hydrocele, cancer of the tongue, anal fistula, and even performed certain kinds of plastic surgery. Indeed he was the first one in Japan who dared to extirpate large tumors, to remove necrotic bone, and to perform amputations. Hanaoka was one of the first Japanese physicians to use the Chinese physician Huo T'o's [2nd century] narcotic drink [possibly Cannabis indica ] before operation as a kind of anesthesia. Huo is attributed with being the first person to discover surgical anesthesia and also to administer it to patients before surgery' [Mestler footnote 37, p.153]. The surgical procedure featured most (and covering several pages, some with more than one illustration) is the operation for breast cancer which Hanaoka is known to have performed in 1804. G. Mestler A Galaxy Of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes On Early Medicine In Japan , p.152-154.
