Document Signed ("John Hancock"), 1 p, oblong 4to (285 x 380 mm), Boston, September 13, 1792, printed and partially accomplished in manuscript, countersigned by John Avery with paper-covered wafer seal, being the appointment of Jethro Putnam as Major of the 6th Regiment, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Militia of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Vertical and horizontal folds, split at the vertical fold, some browning. Matted and framed. Hancock presided over the Second Continental Congress convened after the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, but returned to Boston in July 1778. After commanding a militia unit, he was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1780, a position he held until October 1793.
