Partial letter signed (“John Hancock”), as president of Congress, York Town, Pennsylvania, 5 October 1777. 2 pages, 8vo, comprising the first four-lines of the recto and the final three-lines and signature on verso. A FINE, BOLD HANCOCK SIGNATURE in the surviving fragment of a letter addressed to New York Governor George Clinton, transmitting a resolution of the Congress concerning the erection of a monument to Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer, who died from wounds suffered at the Battle of Oriskany in August 1777. Hancock writes from York, Pennsylvania, where the Congress fled as a result of General William Howe’s invasion.
