Hans J. Wegner (b. Tønder 1914, d. Gentofte 2007) “China chair”. A Cuban mahogany armchair, loose seat cushion upholstered with patinated naturel leather, fitted with buttons. Model 4283. Designed 1944. Manufactured by Fritz Hansen, 1975. Silver plaque in the back stamped Fritz Hansen EFT 64/400, Hans J. Wegner, 1975. In 1974–1975, Fa. Fritz Hansen decided to make a special production of “China Chair” in Cuban mahogany. For 40 years, since 1934, the company had Cuban mahogany at their storage, and they assumed that 400 chairs could be made from the stock. Each chair was given a silver plaque at the bottom part of the back, numbered with a serial number out of 400, company name and Hans J. Wegner's stamped signature. Condition Minor wear due to age and use. Minor marks and scratches. Cushion with patina and stains, two buttons missing.
