THREE PRESIDENTIAL SIGNATURES GRACE THIS PHOTO PORTRAIT, as Harding and his Cabinet pose in the early days of the new administration (when such formal group portraits were usually taken). The President stares somewhat listlessly into space, while two of his more alert and important aides flank him left and right: Charles Evans Hughes, the future Supreme Court Chief Justice, and Andrew Mellon, one of the wealthiest men in America. A youthful and energetic Herbert Hoover sits at the far end of the table. Two future criminal suspects are also present, Attorney General Daugherty and Interior Secretary Fall, of Teapot Dome infamy. Hoover was only half-jokingly referred to as Secretary of Commerce and Under Secretary of Everything Else. A rare example of three successive Presidents pictured together.
