London: Smith, Elder 1878. 3 vols., original brown cloth (vols. 2 & 3 of a slightly lighter brown and of a non-diagonal fine-ribbed weave) blocked in black, gilt, and black, spines gilt-lettered, recased, with probable new endpapers, skilfull repairs to ends of two spines, wear, brown morocco pull-off case. FIRST EDITION, one of 1000 copies printed, conforms to Purdy's primary binding (except for slightly differing shade and weave of cloth on two volumes), frontispiece map in vol. 1. Purdy, pp. 24-27; Sadleir 1113; Wolff 2989. Bookplates of Barton Currie and Frank L. Hogan (Currie owned this copy before Hogan). (3)
