Provenance : The property of a religious institution. Poet, recusant and friend of Ben Jonson, Hawkins is well known as a translator of literary and historical works, including a version of Horace published in 1625. He also made his talents available to the Jesuits -- presumably through his brother Henry, a member of that order -- for the translation of 'pious works aimed at the English market' (ODNB), and the present volume belongs to this genre: nevertheless the extensive revisions show the considerable attention to detail he brought to the task.
