HEATH, H. The Sporting Alphabet . London: C. Tilt, 1840. 12° (161 x 96mm). Etched title and 24 hand-coloured plates. (Light soiling and discolouration.) Green morocco gilt by Rivière, gilt turn-ins, top edges gilt, original front wrapper (mounted) bound in. Provenance : C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 10 July 1939, lot 1516). SCHWERDT COPY. 'A scarce book containing a humorous plate for each letter of the alphabet', Schwerdt I, p.236; together with George Cruikshank's Comic Alphabet , London: 1836, small 8°, hand-coloured woodcut panorama comprising 24 sections concertinered (sections A-B torn along join), original decorated paper boards; and a lithographic concertina 'alphabet for horsemen' (from Arabe to Zuricois) [c.1840], old boards, rebacked.
