HEATH, William (1795-1840). A large collection of caricatures, including the suites Parish Characters in Ten Plates and Household Servants in Six Plates . London: T. McLean, March 1829-November 1830.
HEATH, William (1795-1840). A large collection of caricatures, including the suites Parish Characters in Ten Plates and Household Servants in Six Plates . London: T. McLean, March 1829-November 1830. 2° (394 x 272mm). 90 etchings by William Heath of which 66 WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING, 5 lithographs, one of which by John Doyle (‘H.B.’) and another hand-coloured, and one engraving. (One lithograph torn at gutter just touching caption, one etching loose, and another with tiny marginal tear, occasional light spotting and browning.) Contemporary half russia over green patterned cloth, gilt spine (extremities heavily rubbed, joints splitting). Provenance : John Chaloner Smith (bookplate, and presentation inscription dated 1856 to:) -- Mrs Travers Smith. A FINE COLLECTION OF CARICATURES BY WILLIAM HEATH MANY SUPERBLY COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND . Heath, who often worked under the pseudonym ‘Paul Pry’, began his career as a draughtsman. His main claim to fame, however, was as a consummate caricaturist. He went on to create the first caricature magazine in Europe, The Glasgow , later Northern Looking-Glass , between 1825-26 but he also produced topographical and straight illustration, most notably for James Jenkins's The Martial Achievements (London, 1815). Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return.
