HEBEL, Johann Peter (1760-1826). Autograph letter signed ('Hebel') to an unidentified recipient, n.p., 10 November 1823, one page, 4to , docketed by recipient on verso. Discussing a set of proofs [presumably of his Biblische Geschichten. Für die Jugend bearbeitet , 1824] of which he has accidentally retained the 'missing Number 50', thinking he had already sent it off with the rest of the manuscript: he hastens to send off what he has to hand -- 'the last page follows with the next post'; he corrects a word on p.299, and approves the new form of the title -- 'Der nicht durchstrichene Titel scheint mir nun ganz recht'. Hebel had been asked to draw up the specifications for a biblical text for young Lutheran schoolchildren (between 10 and 12), and had specified that the work should employ a clear and simple syntax and an exciting narrative style. Eventually, he himself was commissioned to undertake the work, which was to remain on the syllabus until 1855.
