HEBREW MANUSCRIPTS. Marriage Contracts. Four ketubbot from Gibraltar. The first: Wednesday, 13 Sivan 5648 (23 May 1888). Hand-painted on vellum, 640 x 550 mm. Groom: Abraham, son of the late Hayyim, son of the late Moses, called Hassan; Bride: Rachel, daughter of the late Isaac, son of the late Moses, called Hassan. Two monumental columns topped by floral vases frame the ketubbah's text. A gold crown accompanied by two birds carrying a floral swag in their beaks tops the page, while the bridal couple's initials "A.R.H." appear beneath the text in decorative gold letters. The Spanish-Moroccan Hassan family was well-known and well-established in Gibraltar; one of its members, Sir Joshua Hassan, was to be the colony's first head of government (1964-69). Enclosed in glazed frame; not examined outside of frame -- The second: Wednesday, 29 Shevat 5667 (13 February 1907). Hand-painted on vellum, 640 x 525 mm. Groom: Solomon, son of the late Moses, son of Shem Tov, called Sequerra; Bride: Leah, called Ilana, daughter of the late Elijah, son of the late Moses, called Benoliel. An elegantly designed and painted contract exhibiting several features characteristic of 19th and 20th-century ketubbot from Gibraltar. Topped by a monumental jeweled gold crown and a gold arched inscription, the ketubbah's text is framed on either side by exquisitely rendered floral garlands. The initials of the bridal couple, "S.E.S." are drawn beneath the text in gold letters embellished with delicate blue and yellow flowers. Members of the prestigious Benoliel family came to Gibraltar from Morocco during the 18th century; there, one of its most notable sons, Judah Benoliel (d. 1839), was consul-general of Morocco, negotiator with numerous European countries, and president of the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce. Enclosed in glazed frame; not examined outside of frame -- The third: Wednesday, 2 Nisan 5648 (1888); Ink and paint on vellum, joining Aaron Billelo and Zahara Lingi. Wedding of Jacob ha-Cohen Al-Hadad and Reina Il-Abus(?). Text surmounted by arched gold inscription and crown, surrounded by floral wreath joined at bottom with ribbon. Sabar, Ketubbah , pp. 254-256.
