HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Autograph letter signed ("P.O. [for Poor Old] Pappa") to Charles Thompson, Havana, 7 June [1933]. SEVEN PAGES, 4to, in ink on six sheets of tan stationery of the Hotel Ambos Mundos in Havana, a number of ink-burns affecting several letters (particularly on last sheet), scattered minute wormholes mostly in blank areas, fold creases. PLANNING THE AFRICAN SAFARI "...Too much sea -- The biggest problem we have is to fight huge fish with very heavy sea in p.m. Have never hooked a big one in the forenoon -- it is hell to have a big fish run out 400 yards or so in seas like we lost the marlin to the shark that day -- can't control the surge...One thing I wanted to mention about Africa -- I have no clothes to travel in and plan to get some when meet you in France when we come up from Spain early part of September... Believe getting clothes in Paris a sound idea -- they can make them in about 4 days -- Then we will be as well dressed as we can be and in a position to be-snot any Maharajahs, Dukes, Punbah Coolies, Resident Sahibs etc. Does that dinner jacket still fit you? Am training down to mine..." "You can go on any boat you want from N.Y. I will meet you at docks -- You might do better on acct. language to go on an American boat -- Pres. Roosevelt is damned good -- We could all come back on Isle de France...Am afraid you'll have to carry the guns unless we ship them out ahead -- Know I couldn't get them through Spain and here the way things are -- But I will meet you at Havre or Cherbourg whichever you land at and should be able to get them in to go through France in bond if no other way...Archie [Archibald MacLeish] definitely can't go -- Mike [Strater], as usual, wont answer my letter -- Sorry to bother you with such a long letter but thought better let you know how things stand..."
