Peter Voulkos Portrait Plate ca 1967 Stoneware and acrylic; ht. 11, wd. 14.5, dp. 5 in. Signed Halem on verso. Halem grew up in the Bronx, attended the Rhode Island School of Design studying ceramics. He became the resident craftsman at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, attended and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin becoming Harvey Littleton's glass studio assistant. Friendship with artists Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova, Peter Voulkos Don Reitz Fritz Dreisbach, Erwin Eisch Dominick Labino Marvin Lipofsky Mark Peiser, Audrey Handler, Dale Chihuly and others were the primary influences in his art. . These works were made from a life casting of Peter Voulkos’s face during a conference in Mt Snow in July of 1967, an event witnessed by Rudy Autio John Mason and Bill Wyman. The plaster cast has since been lost. The works are stoneware and painted with acrylic paint. The platter was exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in New York and featured in an issue of Craft Horizon at the time. Photographs of Henry Halem with Voulkos (and his cigar) at the 1967 conference also exist in the American Craft Archives. Provenance: From the collection of the Artist
