HEYWOOD, Thomas (c. 1573-1641). The Rape of Lucrece. A True Roman Tragedie . London: [E. Allde] for I. B[usby], 1609. Collation: A-K 4 (-blank K4). In verse and prose. (Some soiling, mainly affecting title and K2v, pen trials on K1v, K3 tattered at margin, without final blank). SECOND EDITION OF THIS RARE AND IMPORTANT REVENGE TRAGEDY which concerns the rise of Tarquin Superbus and his wife, Tullia, and their fall at the hand of Brutus after Tarquin's son Sextus rapes Lucrece, the chaste wife of Collatine. 'The rape itself closely follows Shakespeare's poem, leading Holaday to date the earliest version of the play to 1594, though 1606-7 is a more generally accepted date' (David Kathman in ODNB). The half-title draws attention to the play's 'severall songs in their apt places, by Valerius, the merrie Lord amongst the Roman Peeres', and however disconcerting to modern critics these light-hearted songs were undoubtedly one ingredient in its success. Heywood's Roman revenge tragedy went into five editions up to 1638. As Jackson notes, it differed from all his other dramas, written up to this point, in being prepared for the press by the author himself. EXTREMELY RARE, ESPECIALLY IN A PERFECT STATE. ESTC records six copies of the 1608 first edition, of which three are imperfect, and two copies of this second edition, both imperfect: the BL copy lacks the title-page while the V. and A. copy (Dyce collection) lacks H1 and K3. Gregg 273(b); STC 13361. Cf. Pforzheimer 483 (first edition). [ Bound with :] GREENE, Robert (bap. 1558, d. 1592). A Quip for an Upstart Courtier: or, A quaint dispute betweene velvet-breeches and cloth-breeches. Wherein is plainely set downe the disorders in all estates and trades. London: E. Purslow, 1635. 4°. Title-page woodcut. With initial blank. (G3-4 with small laminated repair at margin.) Eleventh edition. The first seven editions of this prose work appeared in 1592. 9 copies of the present edition are recorded, the Sion College copy having been sold by Christie's 19 November 1980, lot 12, for £2700. Allison 103; STC 12305. [ and six other works comprising :] S[HIRLEY], J[ames] (1596-1666). The Wedding . London: John Grove, 1633. Mostly in verse. (Some browning and waterstaining.) Second edition. The first edition appeared in 1629 and a third in 1660. Greg II 425(b); STC 22461. SHIRLEY, J. The Schoole of Compliment . London: J[ohn] H[aviland] for Francis Constable, 1637. Partly in verse. Second edition. The first edition appeared in 1631 and a third in 1667. Gregg II, 441 (b); STC 22457. [RANDOLPH, Thomas (bap. 1605, d. 1635)]. With final blank. (Marginal staining.) [?]Fifth edition. ESTC lists four previous editions in 1630. Greg II 431, 2 (e); STC 20688. K[IRKE], J[ohn] (d. 1643).
