SECOND EDITION OF THIS RARE AND IMPORTANT REVENGE TRAGEDY which concerns the rise of Tarquin Superbus and his wife, Tullia, and their fall at the hand of Brutus after Tarquin's son Sextus rapes Lucrece, the chaste wife of Collatine. 'The rape itself closely follows Shakespeare's poem, leading Holaday to date the earliest version of the play to 1594, though 1606-7 is a more generally accepted date' (David Kathman in ODNB). The half-title draws attention to the play's 'severall songs in their apt places, by Valerius, the merrie Lord amongst the Roman Peeres', and however disconcerting to modern critics these light-hearted songs were undoubtedly one ingredient in its success. Heywood's Roman revenge tragedy went into five editions up to 1638. As Jackson notes, it differed from all his other dramas, written up to this point, in being prepared for the press by the author himself. EXTREMELY RARE, ESPECIALLY IN A PERFECT STATE. ESTC records six copies of the 1608 first edition, of which three are imperfect, and two copies of this second edition, both imperfect: the BL copy lacks the title-page while the V. and A. copy (Dyce collection) lacks H1 and K3.
