HIROSHIGE, UTAGAWA. 1797-1858. Group of six woodcuts from various series, approximately 360 x 250 mm (oban tateye and oban yokoye), various signatures and publisher imprints, all good impressions and generally in excellent condition with a few tiny chips to margins and minor repairs, occasional faint soiling to margins, a few old mount marks, two prints a bit more worn than the others. Frank Lloyd Wright began collecting Japanese woodblock prints in the late 1890's, made his first trip to Japan in 1905, and mounted a retrospective of Hiroshige's work at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1906. The present selection of prints from Wright's collection were given as gifts to Blaine and Hulda Drake; three of the six are INSCRIBED by Wright. The prints include: 1. Shiojiri Pass in Shinano Province from the series Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji (1858). Inscribed "To Hulda Xmas 38 FLLW." 2. Gold Mine in Sado Province from the series Famous Views of the Sixty-Odd Provinces. Inscribed in pencil "To Hulda - from FLLW and OW." Mounted to board. 3. The Go Gorge in Bitchu Province from the series Famous Views of the Sixty-Odd Provinces. Inscribed "To Blaine from FLLW and OW." 4. Suido Bridge and Suruga Hill from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
