Stafford L. Warren (1896-1981) was a physician and radiologist who served as Chief of the Medical Division of the Manhattan Project during World War II. In that capacity, he was present at the Trinity Test in New Mexico, collecting data on radiation dispersal; he led a survey team to assess the after effects of the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki; and was chief of the Radiological Safety Section at the Operations Crossroads testing at the Bikini Atoll. This lot includes materials related to his work leading the survey of the damage to people and surrounding areas after the detonation of Fat Man and Little Boy on August 8, 1945, as follows: 1. Medical Report of the Joint Commission for the Investigation of the Effects of the Atomic Bomb in Japan. Volume I. Typed Manuscript, approx. 200 pp, 4to, [Washington, DC, 1946], illustrated throughout with gelatin silver prints (most 4 x 6 to 5 x 7 inches) laid down to pages, many pages stamped SECRET in red, now struck through, also stamped "classification canceled Jun 7, 1965" to upper cover and title page, bound in brown covers with typed labels. Contents include definition of the terms relating to the physics of the explosion and the health questions afterwards, the materials and methods of the survey, the pathology and statistical studies, and then the data on population and casualties. Haunting images of the destruction of the city and the injuries of the survivors. 2.Final Report of the Findings of the Manhattan District Atomic Bomb Investigating Groups at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Vol I Sec A. A thorough report on the spread of radiation after the bombing. 6. 133 gelatin print photographs, 8 x 10 inches with left 3-hole margin added, of images in Japan after the dropping of the bombs, all stamped "For Official Use Only / Not to be Released from Military Control" in black and later struck through in red, many with penciled identifications added. 7.
