Title: His Iliads Translated, Adorn'd with Sculpture, and Illustrated with Annotations, by John Ogilby Author: Homer Place: London Publisher: Thomas Roycroft Date: 1660 Description: [42], 518 pp. pi1, 2pi2, a-d2, d*-f*2, e-f2, B-I2, K-3L4, chi1, 3M-4A4. With copper-engraved plates including portrait of John Ogilby; elaborate frontispiece with bust of Homer at center; portrait of Charles II; a statue of Homer holding a staff; & 49 plates illustrating scenes from the book. (folio) 42.5x27 cm. (16¾x10¾"), early calf, rebacked with spine strip laid down. A handsome copy of the first edition of Ogilby's important translation of Homer's Iliad in grand format, with a splendid array of fine engraved plates including the elaborate frontispiece and the portraits of Ogilby and Charles II which are often lacking. The plate count of different copies of the work varies, but to the best of our assessment this would appear to be the full complement of the plates. Engraved armorial bookplate. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor wear to binding; a few leaves with margins repaired including the title-page (which is possibly from another copy), light foxing to title, soiling to a few pages, occasional light marginal dampstains, Mm4 with 4" tear into text, otherwise very good, contents generally clean, with full margins.
