Title: Histoire de la Reformation de L'Englise D'Angleterre Author: Burnet, Gilbert Place: Londres Publisher: Chiswel & Pitt Date: 1683 & 1685 Description: Two volumes. 545 + 626 pages. With six engraved portraits after Holbein. Quarto (10 x 7 1/4 inches) contemporary crimson calf; gilt panels and spine. First French edition, with translation by M. de Rosemond. Originally issued in 1679 and 1681, there was a third volume published in 1714. Burnet's "History of the Reformation of the Church of England" was begun during the years of the "Popish Plot," when English Catholics endured a reign of terror. It was intended to refute statements made by Nicholas Sanders, whose work of 1585 was still the commonly accepted account. The Duke of Bedford's copy, with his bookplate, dated 1737, and two small book labels for Woburn Abbey. The bindings are of a similar design but by different hands. Donated by Margolis & Moss, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Lot Amendments Condition: Head of spine on volume one missing; hinges starting; spines darkened. Item number: 243306
