Nineteen plates of etched portraits by Bernard Picart [6], xlviii, 432;[2] 433-816 pp. (4to) 28x22 cm (11x9") Period calf lettered on red morocco label and tooled in gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, edges red. A history of the watershed Council of Constance (1414-1418) in which the Western Schism was ended, Jan of Hus was condemned, and antipope John XXIII was forced to flee dressed as a postman. Observing all was Poggio Bracciolini, bookscout, humanist, and rescuer of Lucretius's On the Nature of the Universe. Lot Amendments Condition: Some scuffing to leather and rubbing to edges; hinges starting a bit, a few stains; about near fine. Item number: 296184
