History art, Archeology. WINCKELMANN. Monumenti antichi History art, Archeology. WINCKELMANN, Johann. Monumenti antichi inediti spiegati ed illustrati da Giovanni Winckelmann. Atlas. [Prato, C. Fea 1831-1834]. Folio; 443 x 315 mm. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with four raised, gilt-ornamented bands. Compartments with elaborate blind-tooling; gilt title, intricate gilt head and foot decorations. 200 engraved plates. The 12 volumes of text are not present. The frontispiece with the portrait, and plate 154 have an old paper repair at the top margin, plate 171 one at the lower margin, just reaching the image, a few marginal spots, otherwise a very good copy.
A finely engraved, large atlas, showing mainly Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717 -1768) was "...a German art historian and archaeologist. He was a pioneering Hellenist who first articulated the difference between Greek, Greco-Roman and Roman art. 'The prophet and founding hero of modern archaeology, Winckelmann was one of the founders of scientific archaeology and first applied the categories of style on a large, systematic basis to the history of art. Many consider him the father of the discipline of art history" (wikipedia). This atlas forms part of "A pioneering work in the field of archaelogical methodology... The term "unpublished" as used here refers not only to coins, statues, cameos, bas-reliefs, and other "monuments" never before reproduced on plates, but also to many that had hitherto been misrepresented or left entirely unexplained (Leppmann). Brunet: "cette édition est accompagnée d'un atlas composé d'environ 200 planches in folio". No titlepage issued as far as we know. The third plate caption states "Giovanni Winkelmann Antiquario 1717-1768, Gio. Fed Reiffenstein P. 1772 and includes a fine engraved portrait of this famous archeologist. Brunet 5, p. 1462
