Massachusetts governor James Bowdoin was elected its first president. Inspired by the British Royal Humane society, the Society's purpose was to "to restore to life persons apparently dead," primarily victims of apparent drowning. The Society constructed "Huts of Refuge" on the shores of Massachusetts where shipwrecked persons could find shelter. Volunteers manned surf boats to aid in rescuing the shipwrecked and monetary awards were made to those who risked their own lives to save others.
