Title: History of the Sandwich Islands Author: Dibble, Sheldon Place: Lahainaluna Publisher: Press of the Mission Seminary Date: 1843 Description: 451 pp. Folding frontispiece map of the Hawaiian Islands and title page supplied in facsimile. 7x4, later three quarters red morocco and boards. First Edition. Rare early history of Hawaii, the first full-scale history of the islands and "one of the most important documents of its time." (Forbes). Some copies contain an additional 20-page appendix, 4 plates and a folding map. This copy has neither plates nor appendix. The folding map is supplied in modern facsimile. Pencil notes to front endpaper indicate that this copy was utilized by the editor of the reprint edition published in Honolulu in 1909. Pencil editorial notes scattered throughout text. Forbes 1383; Hill 476; Sabin 19992 Lot Amendments Condition: Slight rubbing to covers; map and title page in facsimile; lower corner of page iii/iv torn away and mended with a few words of text supplied in manuscript, rest of page soiled, torn, mended with old cellophane tape; moderate foxing to text, good.
