Vienna: Anton Schroll, ca. 1902-1910. 2 volumes in 3 portfolios (comprising 12 fascicles in first portfolio and 4 fascicles each in second and third portfolios). Small 2 o (310 x 203 mm). Loose sheets as issued. 192 designs in first portfolio and 32 designs printed on rectos in second and third portfolios. First portfolio in quarter cloth pictorial boards (rubbing to edges), second and third portfolio (with original printed upper cover mounted on modern boards); 2 modern terra cotta folding cases. Provenance : Grace Z. Marlieb (label in Neue Folge); acquired from Ars Libri, 1991. FIRST EDITION of this rarely seen periodical, printed without date probably between 1902 and 1910. The publication history still needs to be fully researched. Next to the journal, "Ver Sacrum" (Sacred Spring), Die Fläche is one of the most beautiful collection of designs by artist of the "Wiener Werkstätte" and Viennese artist active during the turn of the century. "'Die Fläche' (literally, the surface'), produced in portfolio form, was formulated as a 'Musterbuch,' or pattern book, of graphic insignia and poster designs. 'Die Fläche,' like 'Ver Sacrum,' was conceived as an art object" (Kallir). Designs include: posters, book designs (including dust jackets and endpapers), advertisements, wallpapers, textiles and many more. Aritists include: Max Benirschke Johanna Hollmann, Moritz Jung, Gustav Klimt Minka Podhajska, Rosa Wachsmann Franz von Zülow and many others. Kallir Viennese Design and the Wiener Werstätte p. 124.
